Navigating the hybrid working environment

Ever since the pandemic, the way we work and with whom we work is changing more rapidly than expected. We all have been speculating what the future of work even looks like — whether it’ll be at home, in-office, on-site, or a fair combination of these three. However, the new re-defined working environment — of which we have had our fair share of experiences — has allowed us to re-think and decide what works the best for us. The smart & digital natives, like yours, are being identified by their ability to work with these interchangeable building blocks that can scale up or down or even swap out as per the context. The upcoming workspace model should facilitate exactly this kind of flexibility and agility to unleash new opportunities.

As an immediate and urgent response to the pandemic, many of us turned to cloud-based technologies to make remote work seamlessly. But due to lack of integration between these disarrayed sets of tools employed, there have been prolonged challenges in terms of enhancing productivity, improving collaboration, and scaling businesses by transforming processes:

  • Blurring boundaries: Gartner Research highlights that employees who feel tracked are 94% more likely to pretend to be working due to the pressure of being “always available”. Employees are struggling to know when and how to switch off at the end of their workday, with 40% of hybrid or remote employees reporting an increase in the length of their workday in the past 12 months (Gartner’s Research).
  • Digital Fatigue: Increased use of digital tools has also increased the exposure to digital distractions and is impacting the ability to concentrate. As per recent studies by Gartner, employees in a hybrid working environment have more workload than an on-site environment due to an increase in the number of virtual touchpoints to get the job done. These challenges of not being able to switch off from the working environment lead to early burnout from the work schedule. This has a direct impact on the employee’s well being which has a far greater role to play than we attribute it to.
  • Lack of effective collaboration: Most technologies exacerbate the problem of collaborating efficiently by driving siloes between people, teams, employees, and information. People end up wasting more time in arranging and managing information on disparate tools, rather than on the right projects/tasks.
  • Maintaining security: Sharing of data externally and internally has made us vulnerable to various phishing and malware attacks, putting the organization at risk. Implementing the right technologies which can help strengthen the confidentiality of data and make data sharing with the right stakeholders safe and secure.

While we are still aligning ourselves to the current scenario to make remote working as seamless as possible, Gartner’s research indicates that four out of 10 employees are at risk of leaving if you insist they return to an in-person office environment. Organizations of tomorrow will have to consider what their employees expect the future of work to be and implement strategies that redefine work in terms of remote, distributed, and especially digital. Identifying the right set of tools and technologies with seamless integration which will enable their employees to be ready for the future should be a priority right now. Identifying these is easier said than done. Switching from current ways of working bring in their own set of challenges and requires you to make sure simple and efficient onboarding of your people.
